Whenever you think of the Netherlands, a few iconic images spring to mind – windmills, canals, bikes, clogs, stroopwafels. However, this country’s icon is the tulip!
This blog post contains some tips you might find helpful when being in front of the camera while exploring this country. Here are some tips and ideas to help you plan your next visit!
Tulip season in the Netherlands typically runs from mid-April to early May. Visiting the tulip fields during these days might bring you a chance to see them in full bloom. However, due to weather conditions such as rain and cold, the exact timing may vary.
There are many different tulip fields in the lowlands. Among the most popular are Noordoostpolder, Bollenstreek, Flevoland and (Bulb Region): including the villages of Lisse, Hillegom, and Noordwijkerhout as well as Keukenhof Gardens.
During the day, we recommend shooting during sunrise or sunset to avoid hard sun light. Considering the availability of rental bikes and the fact that we have the fields to ourselves (avoiding crowds), we schedule our photo session and bike tour in the morning.
Public transportation is not available to the tulip fields due to their location in the countryside. Public transportation is not available to the tulip fields due to their location in the countryside. Unfortunately, it is also not possible to walk to the tulips due to their distance from public transportation.
We are happy to accommodate our clients’ needs, whether they want to do our tulip fields shooting and biking tour or a customised route if they want to drive their own car or rent one.
Tulip fields are vibrant and colourful, so you should wear clothing that complements or contrasts with the flowers. A bright or a pastel color always works well. Consider bright colors (white, beige) and soft or pastel colors (pink, red, purple, yellow, green and blue). Colors such as brown and denim can also work well for taking pictures in tulip fields, as they contribute to the country vibe. You should avoid wearing a full black outfit because it adds sadness to your photographs in the fields.
The use of solid colors can help draw the attention to you rather than to your clothes. Avoid busy patterns, such as stripes, dots, and polka dots, as they create an odd effect on camera. However, floral patterns look amazing!
The flow of a dress or a skirt always helps with fun photo ideas, adding a sense of movement and elegance to your pictures.
When doing a photo shoot with multiple people, consider coordinating outfits to create a harmonious and visually appealing look. Color schemes don’t have to match exactly, but they should be consistent.
Wear comfortable shoes or trainers that can handle a bit of dirt. Bring a change of shoes, cowboy boots, or sandals for the shoot itself; they give you a feeling of the countryside.
The right accessories can also make an outfit stand out, such as hats, sunglasses, scarves, foulards, and jewelry. Even though it is spring in Holland, the weather might still be cold, so remember to wear a nice coat, cardigan, or jacket while biking. Aside from the weather, layers can be used to add depth and texture to your pictures.
Consider a natural makeup and hairstyle that enhances your features without overpowering them.
You can add props to your images to help with storytelling, such as a polaroid or vintage camera, a straw bag, tulips or flowers, or even a bike!
In the end, your clothing choice should reflect your personal style and the mood you want to convey in your photographs. You should dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
